A OF WORK/LIFE BALANCE FOR RYAN LEWIS, FOUNDER OF CLUB THIRTEEN HULL @CLUBTHIRTEENHULL

I GET UP AT… It’s a lot later than I’d like to admit. We start our working day at 10am because I’m not a morning person! So anywhere between 8:30 and 9:00 is when I rise.

MY WORK WARDROBE CONSISTS OF… A lot of oversized tees and quite often a pair of shorts. Being from the north, I don’t lose heat from my legs!

MY JOB ENTAILS… Cutting hair for the most part, managing a particular member of the team (he knows who he is). But as a rule my day-to-day job is made very easy with the lads around me. Everyone mucks in together to make sure the shop runs smoothly.

IGOT HERE BY… Refusing to give up. Passion and creativity are my driving forces, but this hasn’t always been a welcome trait in some places I have worked. They just need barbers to get the job done and make the money, which I understand. But I have finally found my people and the passionate side of the industry, which is exactly where I’m meant to be.

MY DAY CONSISTS OF… Getting to the shop for about 9:45, clean my equipment and start trimming! Anywhere I get a spare 15 minutes is usually a coffee run for the lads.

MY FAVOURITE WORK TOOL IS… Hands down it’s my new Gold Beast scissors from Matakki. I’ve been banging on to those guys for so long for a nice gold addition to my collection and they’ve really come through!

MY DAILY FUEL IS… Various forms of caffeine! Usually a couple of coffees and a zero calorie energy drink is standard.

MY SPOTIFY PLAYLIST INCLUDES… The most eclectic mix you could imagine. Most recently there’s been a lot of Limp Bizkit, Dido, Falling in Reverse, some Slipknot… ’90s trance classics are a constant as well as ’00s hip hop and R’n’B. We’re also partial to a bit of New Monkey and Donk down at Club 13.

WHEN I GET STUCK… I’ve a couple of industry figures that I go to on workrelated issues. Emma at Matakki Scissors often jokes about being like my industry mam (she’s not far wrong) and Chelsea at LWPR has been a life saver. But my dad is my biggest go-to when I’m stuck, he has this really amazing way of reminding me that I have the answers myself.

THE MISTAKE I LEARNT THE MOST FROM IS… Assuming everyone holds the same values that I do. This is one that usually stings a lot. However I still look for the best in everyone, just not so blindly.

THE ADVICE I’M GLAD I IGNORED IS… To give with nothing in return. Dad has always told me that no matter how many losses I have, the few wins gained from being true to myself will see me through and I’d still be able to respect myself. And again, the team down at Club 13 really is testament to that. I’m so grateful and proud of those boys.

AFTER WORK CONSISTS OF… More of boxing or MMA training at Hit Squad in Hull than beers at the moment.

I DECOMPRESS BY… Gaming, which is like meditation to me. It takes me out of my own head. The gym or combat sports too.
