GREAT DANE
Mads-Sune Lund Christensen creates covetable colour for clients and A-listers alike, taking his talent and in-demand status in his creative stride
Mads-Sune Lund Christensen is super-talented and delightfully humble – a powerful combination, much like the exquisite colours he mixes for his devoted clientele.
Creative master colourist at Josh Wood Atelier in Holland Park since 2015, he moved to London with his partner for a year in 2012. Twelve years later, it seems to feel like home. Hailing from a small fishing village in Bogense, Denmark, it was Mads-Sune’s mum who first planted the hairdressing seed, signing him up for a course that has since led to a covetable career in colour. “I instantly fell in love with all factors of it – the chemistry, the geometry; I love that you can make a big difference to people's lives with such small changes,” he says.
With a love of physics and chemistry, it was colour that always called his name. “Hair colour is always evolving with new technology and approaches,” he explains. “I love science. For me, the thrill is always seeing the result of a colour application.”
Mads-Sune is considered and disciplined, something he attributes to Gun-Britt Coiffure, the salon he first worked at in Denmark. “It had a very ‘old school’ training discipline,” he recalls. “The structure there gave me much of the work ethic I have now. I learnt how to keep my core values, to stay humble.”
He reveals he has a deep love for what he does. “I love transforming people. It’s great when you feel you have made a difference to someone’s day.” Clients include a heady mix of A-listers and celebrities, many of whom he has built close relationships with. It’s not hard to see why. While known for creating expensive-looking hair and effortless, natural blondes (in keeping with his Scandinavian roots), Mads-Sune is also versatile. “I’m never afraid to take on a challenge,” he says.
He’s happiest one-on-one with his clients at the ultra-cool Josh Wood Atelier. “Working with clients is often where you feel you can make the biggest difference. I’m also grateful to work in a creative space with super-talented people,” he says.
He cites Josh as opening up his eyes to a different world of hair. “He taught me how to appreciate myself, appreciate my talents, how to evolve and to approach colour. He took me under his wing and showed me a different way of hairdressing I didn’t know existed. I have a heartfelt gratitude to him for all of that.”
He has also worked with a long list of celebrities he’s lucky enough to call friends (think Eddie Redmayne, Kristen McMenamy, Emily Blunt, Saoirse Ronan and Elizabeth Debicki) and on several high-profile editorial campaigns and fashion shows with Josh (including Marc Jacobs, Prada, Valentino, Versace and Louis Vuitton, to name just a fabulous few). Well-versed in trends, he predicts we’ll see a return to quiet luxury next season. “It will be about embracing natural dimension with luxurious, elegant, understated hair that leaves people wondering if you’ve had it coloured or not.” And if anyone can create it with meticulous skill and illuminating charm, he can.
