You did Colour Specialist in 2019. What has been the impact on your career?

Once you start Colour Specialist you have a huge realisation about the technical aspects of colour and realise that there’s so much you have to learn. It’s such an inspiring course and it gives you such a level of confidence to push boundaries, knowing that you have the technical knowledge to be able to back up your decisions. It also has an impact on not just your clients but also your team and their clients as you are in such a better position to offer advice.

Why do you invest in Colour Specialist for your team members at Sally Montague?

We like to have at least one colour specialist in each of our salons. This helps the rest of the team with troubleshooting and the clients love it too. I think it re-inspires the colourist. We encourage any of our specialists to pass on their knowledge through education events or ‘guest’ trainers on our virtual team meetings. We also have separate colour specialist consultations which clients can request for more technical and challenging colour work.

As a L’Oréal Colour Trophy judge, what’s different about the Colour Specialist award?

The Colour Specialist category is still quite new to the competition but is so exciting because it combines creativity with technical expertise. The judging process is different to the main Colour Trophy award in that we get to meet the competitors and hear their vision, formulas and challenges and look through their work. It’s a real challenge but a huge honour to win!

Why did Colour Specialist appeal to you?

While I thrive on the artistic side of colouring, the science and theory behind it fascinates me equally. When our salons transitioned to L’Oréal Professionnel Paris, I eagerly learned about Colour Specialist. I knew immediately that I had to complete it! As the head of our in-salon Academy programme, I strive to ensure I have the correct information and experience to guide our learners through their colour training, both in practical and theory sessions.

You did the programme in 2023. What has been the impact?

Simply having the title of “L’Oréal Colour Specialist” attracts new clients, but the confidence and expertise behind this have strengthened my relationships with clients, enhancing their trust in my advice and colour formulations. From a business perspective, I can charge higher prices for colour services because I possess a specialised skill set that not every stylist in the salon has. This expertise also makes me the go-to stylist for correctional work, which I love. It also provides a talking point, as its 16 weeks of hard graft and education. Clients loved hearing my updates and were incredibly supportive of my journey.

What’s so special about the graduation ceremony?

It uniquely celebrates each student, offering the opportunity to accept your diploma in a cap and gown with a champagne reception – something most of us would have missed out on from opting out of a university-led career. My graduation was filled with passion, support, and encouragement from the L’Oréal team – the perfect conclusion!
