TAKE CONTROL OF TONERS
TIM SCOTT-WRIGHT
THE HAIR SURGERY, STOURBRIDGE
You will only be short-changing yourself and your business if you undersell the toning part of the blonde process! Make sure that the cost of your colour service includes the toner, which may mean increasing prices overall. If a toner isn’t needed, a deep-conditioning treatment could be used as an alternative, making the cost of the service flexible but comparable. We also offer a ‘toner shot’, essentially a service to clean and refresh the colour. This can be done on the day after talking to the client or used in-between appointments.
Communication is key. Be prepared to explain why the toner is needed and why there’s a cost. Think about the terminology you use. In the past, the word ‘toner’ has been associated with ‘fixing’ a blonde. Terms such as glaze, gloss or colour refiner are more relatable and may help clients to understand why the toner will give them the result they want.

Toners could represent a problem as they are often mixed and applied by our senior apprentices. But we use Vish Colour Management, which ensures the correct amount of product is used whenever the stylist mixes from a previous colouring session so there is no surplus washed down the sink. For new colouring sessions, as Vish communicates directly with our salon software rather than leaving it up to the team to report, the correct amount of money is always charged for the toner, every visit. It’s been a game-changer in my salons!
